drivers education school driving instruction

Is taking driving lessons at a driving school equivalent to what i would get taking drivers ed?

i missed the cut off for spring drivers ed at my school, and i would prefer to take lessons alone anyway, but my dad’s saying if i go to east meadow driving school it doesn’t matter because i HAVE to take drivers education, not driving lesson because it’s apparently not the same thing.. is this true? i know we need 6 hours of in car instruction, and with the class i would get 7.5, and also the driving school offers a 5 hour pre-licensing course and a 6 hour defensive driving course.. along with the ten 45 minute lessons i would get.. is this everything i would be getting by taking drivers ed?

“East Meadow” and “five-hour” lead me to believe you’re in New York… Driving schools are more personalized and one-on-one whereas in Driver’s Ed, you may be driving with three or four others in the car. In the end, you’ll pretty much learn the same thing. Restrictions for a junior license are pretty tight in New York City and Long Island, so if you take driver’s ed, you’ll get a senior license at 17 (instead of the normal 18). You cannot get a senior license at 17 with driving school.

You don’t HAVE to take driver’s ed, you can instead take a five-hour prelicensing course before taking a road test.
